I like to test out ideas, possibilities and opportunities.
What will work, I’ll wonder.
Let’s take some tests this week and then grade the test to see what gets an A.
We can test:
whether a new habit works. Earlier this year, I started stretching while my coffee brews in the morning. That test convinced me of its value. Now, it’s a habit.
whether a change in a habit works. Last year, I tested whether or not getting my coffee ready the night before so I just need to press a button in the next morning will help. I went back to preparing the coffee in the morning because I like the flow of my morning process: Make the coffee, make the bed, do the stretches.
whether a different approach during a difficult conversation with a family member works better. Perhaps we change the timing of the conversation (from evening to morning) or the words that begin the conversation (“I’m worried and wonder if we could talk this out”).
We can remind ourselves to test a different strategy, a change in a habit or the timing of a process by asking this question to start our day: “What will I test today?”
What will you test?

What a great reminder! I often get caught up in trying to make changes and then when I can't morph something into a new habit, I think I've failed.
We, too, tried the coffee experiment. It is nice when I just have to hit 'brew', but we are so wiped out at the end of the day that setting the coffee maker up often doesn't happen. Brewing the coffee fits into my morning routine so it's OK to leave it for the morning. I have always been a morning person.
I am going to experiment with the morning stretches while the coffee brews. My routine is feed/medicate the cats (must be done first or ELSE!), brew the coffee, unload/load the dishwasher (if necessary). My neck and shoulders could use the extra stretching.
Thank you for writing these every week. They are so helpful!
