This week, we saw leadership. During an agonizing wait to be declared a winner, President-Elect Joe Biden led with calm, confidence and gratefulness.
Every day, we can choose how we want to lead. We can show up as a leader in our day by the way we treat others, respond to difficulties and engage in conversations.
Each morning, before you get up from bed, ask yourself, “How will I lead today?” Each interaction you have with family, friends, colleagues and strangers creates an opportunity for you to lead. With this question in mind, look at these interaction as an opportunity to be the leader that impacts you and others in positive, meaningful ways.
For me, I want to lead with:
Calm. When I’m calm, I’m listening which means I’m receiving really helpful information. The more I listen, the better I understand. The more I understand, the more I act with compassionate and empathy.
Detachment. I tend to take situations personally which means I over-react. I want to remember that it’s not about me and it’s not personal. When I take it personally, I stay stuck in self-pity. When I don’t take situations and experiences personally, I move forward with graciousness.
Creativity. If I think outside the box, I can solve problems while perhaps creating unexpected opportunities for myself and for others. Brainstorming with others to resolve a problem also manifests powerful wisdom.
When I ask myself this question, How will I lead today?, I am entering my day with the knowledge that I am a leader in my day. When I define my leadership qualities, I give myself my roadmap to act as a leader throughout my day.
I’d love to know how you’ll use this question this week. What are three of your leadership qualities?

I'm very taken by this technique of thinking of qualities, "calm...detachment...creativity," captured by one word. Then expanding each word with a couple specific statements about its value to you. Something about it is so enriching and encouraging, and helps me focus on what's important. I must try it! Thank you....
