Our day can overwhelm us with decisions, tasks, responsibilities. The pressure to be all things to all people can be exhausting.
Our values can help us manage the day in a way that also brings us comfort. When our values guide us, we can make decisions, choose priorities and take action in a way that works best for us. We’re then choosing how we move through our day rather than allowing others to run it.
For instance, if you hope to get a promotion, or a grant or a freelance gig and you don’t, you can decide that, because you value graciousness, you can reply to the rejection email with a note of gratitude for the opportunity. You didn’t get the opportunity but you kept your good work in the world. In addition, you created the potential for a future opportunity.
We can remind ourselves that our values can guide us when we begin each day this week with the question, “Which value will guide me?”
Which value often guides you?
