In 2016, I purchased a pass to our outdoor community pool. I floated because I wasn’t sure how well I could swim. I took lessons as a kid but hadn’t done much in a pool except float (which is awesome) as an adult.
I saw, though, that others could swim laps. Back and forth, back and forth. As I watched, I thought: I want to do that.
The next summer, I started swimming laps. Not well and not much at first. I showed up as often and as much I could to practice. By the end of the summer, I could swim laps. I could go back and forth and back and forth.
The commitment to the practice pays off today. I swam yesterday and left the pool feeling grateful for this exercise that feels more like a beautiful water massage.
This week, let’s start the habit of practice. Let’s remind ourselves that we want to improve through practice by asking ourselves this question each morning:
When will I practice?
With this question, we’ll make the time to practice. We know what we want to practice. Now, we want to commit to it.
When will you practice?
