Yesterday, I led a day of training for participants in our Certified Caregiving Consultant program. During our training day, participants practice our skills and planning tools with each other and with me.
During one practice session, one of the training participants asked me to define reprieve after I shared that I just need a break, a respite. After defining reprieve as a complete break from worries, I realized that I often carry a question, “What’s the next shoe that will drop?” that keeps me in a state of alert. The question, “What’s next?” keeps me worried.
What if, I said, I instead ask myself is “What’s now?”
I can bring my focus back to now and give myself a choice about what I can do now. Right now, I can take a walk, say a prayer, call a friend, create.
My insight isn’t new but my question, What’s now, becomes a really helpful prompt to move away from an anticipation of another crisis to an embrace of the present moment.
Let’s begin our day with week with the question, What’s now? When the worries creep in, pivot to this question to minimize the anticipation about a difficult future and maximize the moment.
What’s now?
