What Will You Retire?
Rather than believing retirement is a far-off goal, what we can retire today?
In the past few days, I spoke with two colleagues who quit jobs because they became too frustrated with their co-workers.
Their conversations came at a time when I’ve been thinking about our countdown to that day when we can change our work: Retirement Day. I don’t think we want to retire from working; I think we want to retire from working with people we just don’t like. We grow weary of having little choice in how much time we spend we colleagues who simply frustrate and aggravate us. We long for having a say so that we work with others we like and trust, who share the same commitment to creating quality work.
Retirement seems to be a day too far in the distant, too elusive for us. This week, let’s decide that we can retire what no longer works for us.
For instance, you can retire:
Tolerating what’s intolerable
Remaining silent when you would feel better inserting your voice
Giving your energy into relationships which only take
Selling yourself short
Sacrificing your needs to please others
Saying “yes” when you really mean “no”
Saying “no” when you really want to say “yes”
Deciding that what you want must be put off to another day rather than taking steps today.
To remind us that retirement can happen any day, let’s begin our days this week with this question:
What will I retire today?
