Last week, I engaged in too much drama. I entered conversations with the intent to collaborate, to create good work, to better understand another’s perspective.
Unexpectedly, the conversations derailed from too much drama. My conversation partners argued, created confusion, deflected from our purpose. I doubled down, with hopes I could work through the drama to get back to the point — creating quality work.
Unfortunately, I ended up contributing to the drama. I stood my ground because I believe in where I stand. The problems was I spent too much time defending my ground, which wasted my time.
Because I am involved in projects with these partners, the chances that I could spend another week in chaos is good.
But I can’t.
Because I need a new strategy, I’ve decided to ask myself this question as I start my day: How will I invest my time?
I want to invest my time in making a difference, developing meaningful programs, creating impactful opportunities. When the discussion deviates from my purpose, I’ll simply move on. I can ignore which means I simply don’t engage. I can end the conversation with thanks so I can get back to my work.
I can stand my ground by simply being where I am, tending to my work, committed to my work and inviting like-minded individuals into my work. I invest in my work which means I de-vest from unhelpful drama with others who just don’t get it.
How will you invest your time this week?
