A client rarely brings me to tears.
This week, a client brought me thisclose to a flowing stream of tears. I’m sure her nervousness about stepping out of her comfort created her chaos. I did what I could to lessen her nerves by immediately replying to her emails, providing clear instructions, giving her my phone number, answering her comments, meeting with her on Zoom, and connecting with her in our chat room. No matter what I did to try to steady her stress, she ignored my instructions, continuing to spin in her own turmoil. Her disarray, though, impacted my days in an awful way.
That experience led me to think about our tears and how often they fall while we minimize the reason behind the water works. “I shouldn’t be crying,” we tell ourselves. We cry for good reasons. Sometimes, we shed happy tears. Sometimes, we cry out of absolute, utter, terrible frustration.
Whatever the reason, let’s take time this week to care for our tears. We can remind ourselves that tears need our TLC by asking ourselves this question to begin our day: “How will I care for my tears?”
We can take care of our tears by:
Giving our tears the time they need. Rather than rushing them, let’s give them the space to roll.
Acknowledging the emotion behind our tears. Let’s name the cause and feel it. We deserve to take a moment to really feel it. When we say, “I’m so frustrated or I’m so happy,” we release our truth, which empowers us.
Receiving support for our happiness or our frustration.
Rather than shake them off, let’s sit with our tears. When we do, we let them work their magic. As they fall, so does our frustration. Conversely, as they drop, we also raise our recognition of our happiness. Let’s experience those emotions so we give ourselves a chance to feel better or to remember our happy moments.
How will you care for your tears?
