I hosted our monthly Soul Break, a 20-minute reprieve to soothe our soul, last week. This month, we took a break from our regrets which keep us worried about our past rather than being fully present in this moment. We tend to judge an entire experience by one moment. Let's pivot to seeing our powerful, positive impact in all the moments.
During our Soul Break, I asked attendees to consider this question: How can we flip the script? Meaning, how can we change the story we tell ourselves from one of judgment to one of compassion?
We often get caught up in telling ourselves a version of events that shines a spotlight on the minute we did something wrong rather than honoring all the moments when we showed up with the right words, actions and support. We may overlook the importance of our learning moments, those critical moments when we decide we can do better.
To remind ourselves that we can choose the details of the story we tell ourselves, we can begin our day by asking ourselves this question: How can I flip the script?
You could flip the script on:
A situation you took personally. Instead of judging the entire experience by that one uncomfortable moment, you now can tell a story about a situation that once you took personally and now realize was about someone else's baggage. You can focus on all the moments you maintained your composure and perspective.
A situation that didn't work out the way you hoped. Rather than defining the experience by the moment of disappointment, you now can tell a story about rebounding from an unexpected outcome to develop a better solution. You can highlight all the moments you demonstrated resilience and creativity.
A situation that left you so shocked you couldn't stand up for yourself. Instead of replaying that single moment of feeling powerless, you now can tell a story about receiving support so you are ready to assert yourself. You can celebrate all the moments you've grown stronger and more prepared.
Each of these script flips demonstrates the choice we have: we can focus on one difficult moment that makes us judge ourselves harshly or we can choose to see the fuller picture that includes our growth, resilience, and positive impact.
What's a script you will flip?
